This committee is dedicated to helping individuals in the community with sight related needs. Each year the Milford Lion Club spends hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars specifically related to sight projects. Each year, many hours are spent collecting used eyeglasses from the community and recycling them for use by third world nations.
Each year the Milford Lions Club purchases eye exams and/or eyeglasses for around 80 Milford residents which totals approximately $15,000. We work closely with the Milford School District, the Division for the Visually Impaired, Social Services and the Home of the Brave. Referrals from these groups are handled quickly and efficiently.
The Club has purchased three Optelec Clearview magnifiers to help visually impaired individuals read, write letters and do their checkbooks. One unit was installed at the Milford Public Library, another at the Milford Senior Center, and one for an individual. Total cost for these machines was over $8000.
Every year the Milford Lions Club provides $1500 toward the purchase of large print books for the Milford Library. We also make annual donations to the Lions Vision Research Foundation at Johns-Hopkins Hospital, Leader Dogs for the Blind, the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley, the Delaware Sight and Hearing Foundation and Kent County Christmas Party for blind and visually impaired.
The Leonard B. Donohoe Memorial Golf Tournament is one source of income to help pay for sight related activities. The tournament is supported by many local businesses with door prizes and hole sponsorships. We thank all the businesses and individuals that participate and encourage others to get involved and help provide the gift of sight.
